Well, I have since disassembled two more Hohner Piano models for cleaning and reconditioning and found that instead of this gasket, the instruments had a thin, black strip of hard plastic glued over these holes.

I am still puzzled why these holes are here, only to be covered up by a gasket or thin sheet of plastic.
