Replacement for a broken reed for a Hohner professional 36?

Hi all, I have sourced a Hohner professional 36 and was wondering if it’s possible to replace a broken reed on it?

I don’t own a pro 36, but I imagine it’s going to be much harder than replacing a standard melodica reed. I’m not even sure what the tongues are made from….
Maybe Melodica Me might have a thought?
I was hoping Melodica Me might chime in as he seems to know a lot about these melodicas and owns one or two himself. I am currently sourcing a very good piano accordion repairer who might be able to help me. Thanks for the response Troy.

Hello Adam, where are you located. I have a guy in Los Angeles that works on accordions that replaced my reeds on my Vibrandoneon that can probably do the same for your Pro 36. These are single reeds so they are easier to work on. The company in Los Angeles is called Dave’s Accordions, he is actually in the community of Atwater. Great guy you may have a wait simply because he is the only guy in the nearby area so he has more work than he can handle at times. Dave could not find my reed so he made it. I am looking for another Pro 36 just to have spare reeds. So if you really like your Pro 36 you should consider doing the same it the long run it would be cheaper. by the way, I know once you play the Pro-36 most of your other melodicas will sound pale in comparison.

Hi Melodica Me, thank you for your input. I live in a remote town in the North West of Australia, so anywhere from here is a long way away 🙂
I am really pleased with my ‘find’ as it appears to be in great condition apart from the broken reed. You are of course correct about the difference between this instrument and my other melodicas, the only one I have that comes close is the Hohner Piano 36.
I am more of a collector than a musician so I really hope I can restore it to it’s former glory, or close enough to it’s former glory.
I am fairly good at tinkering and thought that I might be able to repair it myself if I could just get a replacement reed… So your advice to keep an eye out for a basket case Pro 36 as spare parts was where I was thinking of going with it. At the same time, I would not be averse to sending it over to America to have someone fix it, so thank you very kindly for the reference to the gentleman who repaired your Pro 36.
I have been in contact with an accordion repairer and restorer who lives ‘close by’ (only 1500kms away…) He is currently on holidays in his native Macedonia but he has offered to take a look at my Pro 36 it to see if he can repair it.

Adam, if you see a Hohner “Solist” that is as you say a basket case, for a decent price you can pick that one up as well, since it uses the same reeds as the Pro 36. The problem here is that it is even more rare than the Pro 36 and you will probably use parts from your Pro 36 to fix the “Solist” see the review I wrote on it.
Melodica-MeThanks for the tip on the Soloist having the same reeds. I had read your review on the solist and when I first started bidding on this 36 Pro I almost thought it might have been a Soloist as the gold writing had been rubbed off and the pictures, although very clear, were not clear enough to give me a certain ID on it. It turned out to be a Pro 36, no complaints from me though.

Adam, wanted to give you the heads up on a Pro 36 on Ebay item # 331340895503 check it out looks super clean you may want to keep your first one for parts.

Monsters of MelodicaSadly too rich for my blood Melodica Me, it all happened in the last couple of hours of bidding too. I was tempted to match the winning bidder and add that lovely example to my collection but my marriage and long suffering wife would have been affected if I had. I’m a happily married man and want to keep it that way… 🙂
It did make me pleased though, as I still have my broken reed Pro 36 and this only assured me that it’s a good idea to get it repaired.
