Time for a how to video from My Melodica Shop. This video is “Making a Melodica mouth piece. This video shows the use of Ebonite (hard Rubber) I purchased from Russia. This is the same material used to make the more expensive saxophone mouth pieces (not Plastic). You can also use an acrylic, wood or even stainless steel or brass, but in this case I have always wanted to make one from Ebonite. sorry the voice audio was lost in one portion of the video while I was turning and boring the hole where the mouth piece extension pipe will be inserted. I wanted to try a different mouth piece from that of a trumpet style I normally use. I have not decided if I like this style better or not since I have just started working with it. I may at a later time make a trumpet style Mouth piece which will be much easier to make since it will be done on the lathe an no mill or special jig set up will be needed. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

I wish I had your skills and machinery to build a recorder-like mouthpiece (not much different from the one you build in the video, maybe smaller).

Thanks Gianluca, a 36mm x1 50mm piece was a little over $17.00 USD on Ebay. The material is really great to work with, it cuts very easily with no problems. I originally was going to go with Bakelite but it was just to expensive to experiment with. You can acomplish the same with a drill press, sharp flat file, drill bits and a core box router bit and a little patience.
Melodica-MeI have access to a drill press… maybe I’ll try, although I have zero experience in this kind of working.
I wonder if anyone could make a comparison with 3D-printing of mouthpieces: what are the pros and cons of the two type of processing, compared to each other?
I think there is a little bit of a market with melodica mouthpieces: I am not particularly happy with the basic ones and it seems to be a common feeling…gl
So I am thinking of making another mouth piece, but would like to try a different material just to try something different? any suggestions.
