Hohner is a musical instrument manufacturer with a reputation for innovative design and invention. The company was founded in Germany by Matthias Hohner in 1857, who began making harmonicas with his wife and one other employee. During the 1950s the Hohner company added a newly invented instrument they named ‘melodica’ to their catalogue. The melodica was a success, and was soon copied by several other companies around the world.

This Melodica is an amazing instrument no longer produced by Hohner. I want to assume that it was a limited run because I have searched for information on this beauty but have yet to find any. As discribed above with a wooden interior, steel individual reeds and all metal mechanics make this one beautifully made and sounding instrument. It came with a impressive hard case with a satin lined interior on a bed of foam. The tone is full with depth. Like the Hohner Professional 36, it is a heavier melodica in comparison to the Piano 36 which is made mostly of a plastic interior for the exception of the metal reed plate. The Hohner Solist ( spelling is correct) translated to English means "Soloist" is a must have if you are looking for a quality professional instrument. I am a jazz musician and love the way this melodica feels and responds, especially on the lower registers very clean and full. Unlike a reed plate where notes tend to schrill a bit these single reeds are thick and are on a wooden frame so the resonance is very nice. It would be great to get more information on the history of these older Hohner Melodicas.rnMelodica-Me
