This is a great video about the Sheng, the 3,000 year old precursor to the melodica. The most interesting feature for me is the chamber at the bottom, which is kept filled with hot water to heat the instrument, and reduce condensation. Also, a green paste is added to the reed, using a stone and a ‘special plate’ to make a ‘very beautiful sound’, and it’s tuned by adding a (poisonous) compound of ‘toosha'(?) mixed with wax, which can easily drop the reed by at least a semitone if needed.
I know such thing. But it looks too complicted to play on it
