Expelling moisture – tube first

    Maybe this is obvious to everyone, but it wasn’t immediately obvious to me: when blowing through the tube with the release valve pressed, it makes sense to have cleared out the tube previously.

    The normal tendency, I think, is to play for a while and then, when done, simply press the valve and blow. I realized later that I’m just blowing all the moisture from the tube into the instrument.

    So what I do now is remove the tube, blow the moisture onto a napkin, reattach the tube, and then blow into the instrument with the valve pressed.

    My aim is to preserve the life of the reeds by reducing the amount of time they sit with accumulated moisture.
