I recently bought a cheap melodica and, since I enjoy tinkering and fixing things, I’m trying to get it into at least a usable condition. So far, I’ve managed to tune it, but now I have a new issue. When pressing a key, the sound starts out very breathy, almost like air is coming out without a proper note, but then it eventually plays fine. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I’m thinking it might be related to the seals around the keys—perhaps they need some attention. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

I can’t say for sure how to fix it, but it’s definitely an air leakage problem. Unfortunately I’ve never successfully fixed a leaky melodica, and the one time I tried I made the problem worse. Hopefully someone else who has experience with this will come by to help.

It sounds like there’s too much of an air gap between the reed tongue and the frame. Have a look at the reed and see if this is the case. If so, you can use a thin, blunt metal rod (or similar) to gently close the gap by stroking the length of the tongue.

Find out more by searching for “gapping” in this website or on youtube

Also could the water key be not closing properly?

I checked it and it’s not the case. With no keys pressed no air is coming out.
